Boarding House Mentors and PLN Partnership Strengthens during Summer 2017 Surf Camp

Para Los Niños Afterschool Program is always looking for opportunities to involve students in engaging activities specifically during the most critical times where students are most vulnerable. Our students at the Charter Middle School had a once in a lifetime experience learning about surfing over a six-week course during the summer. Ten students were randomly selected to attend Surf Camp at Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades on Sundays from July 9th – August 13th.

Boarding House Mentors (BMH) is a non-profit volunteer youth surfing organization established in 2002 to transform the lives of under-served youth through participation in surfing. BHM creates a safe and supportive youth and mentor community environment, inspiring positive self-image, confidence, and healthy lifestyles among the youth and encouraging respect for the community and the ocean environment.

The partnership now in its fourth consecutive year, has provided opportunities for students to develop an interest in surfing. Many of our student participants were apprehensive to try surfing at first but with the help of our staff and BHM mentors, they took the healthy risk of trying to surf and really enjoyed it.
