1/22/11 LAGRANT COMMUNICATIONS Partners with Para Los Niños and Center Theatre Group
LAGRANT COMMUNICATIONS Partnered with Para Los Niños and Center Theatre Group to Send At-Risk Families to a Theater Production
The Agency’s Holiday Initiative Surpassed its Original Goal and delivered Holiday Cheer to even More families
LAGRANT COMMUNICATIONS, an integrated multicultural marketing communications firm that specializes in the Hispanic and African American consumer markets, announced its holiday initiative in November 2010 to raise funds to send at-risk families served by Para Los Niños to a theater production at the Center Theater Group in Los Angeles.
LAGRANT COMMUNICATIONS’ staff was able to double its original goal of sending 10 families of five and was able to send 20 families of five to the theater. Families selected by Para Los Niños attended the Circus INcognitus performance at Center Theatre Group’s Kirk Douglas Theatre on Saturday, January 15, 2011 and January 22, 2011.
“It is indeed a pleasure to partner with two great community-based organizations in Los Angeles. I am proud of our staff’s dedication in giving back to the community in which many of us live and work. Overachieving this goal has resulted in more families being able to enjoy the theater,” said Mr. Kim L. Hunter, president and CEO, LAGRANT COMMUNICATIONS.
The agency’s holiday initiative is just one of the many yearlong community service projects the firm has identified to mark its two decades in business. On Sept. 1, 2010, LAGRANT COMMUNICATIONS celebrated its 20th anniversary. Over the course of the next year, each employee of the firm will also volunteer 40 hours at a not-for-profit organization whose mission is health care, education or arts & culture in Los Angeles, Dallas or Princeton, N.J., for a total of 840 employee volunteer hours. Employees have the option of volunteering at the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Center Theatre Group, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Para Los Niños, or Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).
For more than a decade, LAGRANT COMMUNICATIONS has been able to support its corporate social responsibility initiatives and surrounding communities through in-kind contributions, cash contributions, and underwriting. The firm also has an employee gift-matching program, where the agency matches an individual employee’s contribution up to $500 to any not-for-profit organization that falls under the company’s corporate social responsibility initiatives.
LAGRANT COMMUNICATIONS’ social responsibility program’s philosophy is simple: The more education an individual receives, the more they will learn to take care of their health, and therefore take advantage of arts and culture in their community.

1/25/11 Para Los Niños Celebrates at City Hall
Nonprofit organization marks 30th Anniversary with “Para Los Niños Day”
It all began thirty years ago with less than 100 children who, while their parents worked, had been found wandering the dangerous streets of Skid Row and the hallways of grim residential hotels originally intended as temporary housing for homeless men. Their refuge from exposure to drugs, crime, violence and other things kids should never witness became a warehouse in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles rented by a fledgling group called Para Los Niños. WHEREAS, after reading a Los Angeles Times story in 1979 entitled, “The Children of Skid Row,” which captured the essence of impoverished children living in the shadows of society, Tanya Tull, a social worker and teacher, was moved to create the first children’s social service agency on Skid Row, to be called Para Los Niños/For the Children; and
In recognition of the opportunities Para Los Niños has provided for thirty years to tens of thousands of children and families since opening it’s first center on Skid Row, Los Angeles City Council President Pro Tempore Jan Perry today honored the nonprofit organization in Council Chambers, declaring that January 21, 2011 be “Para Los Niños Day.”
"Para Los Niños has a long history of supporting children and their families, ensuring that they have the resources to grow and succeed. They are empowering the next generation and, in doing so, lifting up our entire community," said Council President Pro Tempore Perry. "It is only fitting that we celebrate their 30th anniversary by declaring it 'Para Los Niños Day' in Los Angeles."
Incorporated in 1980, Para Los Niños is a nonprofit organization committed to the academic success and social wellbeing of children. Through early childhood education, charter schools and community partnerships, the organization provides high-quality education, mental health and family support services to children living in high-poverty areas of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. In partnership with families, Para Los Niños creates opportunities for children to succeed in school and in life.
Said Gisselle Acevedo, President and CEO of the organization, “In anticipation of today’s celebration, someone asked me: What if, after all these years, Para Los Niños ceased to exist tomorrow? What difference would it make?”
“The answer for me is clear. Over 7,000 children and families in some of the most at-risk communities in Los Angeles would not have access to high quality education and support services. These hard working families would not find the opportunities in their under-served neighborhoods that would enable them to turn their backs on poverty.
“In partnering with Para Los Niños, our families know that they are not alone. They know that they can rely on our teams of dedicated, talented and passionate teachers and social workers….mentors and therapists…. family advocates and accountants. At Para Los Niños, children and families know that they will be embraced and enveloped by comprehensive services, compassionate professionals, and generous supporters like those here today.”
After reading a newspaper story in 1979 entitled, “The Children of Skid Row,” which captured the essence of impoverished children living in the shadows of society, Tanya Tull, a social worker and teacher, was moved to create the first children’s social service agency on Skid Row, to be called Para Los Niños/For the Children. Armed with a $5,000 grant, she rented an old eyelash factory at 6th and Gladys in the heart of Skid Row, renovated it, got a license, and opened the organization’s first child care facility.
Since then, under the leadership of other such visionaries as former President and CEO Miki Jordan, Para Los Niños has worked tirelessly to give children living in the poorest communities of Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties the education, skills and resources required to build a future beyond poverty.
With 400 employees and an annual operating budget of $27 million, the organization today serves over 7,000 children and families from 22 facilities. Para Los Niños has gained a reputation for excellence throughout Los Angeles and the nation, receiving numerous honors and awards for its impactful work, including accreditation by the international Council on Accreditation, the Excellence in Education Award by U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, the National Council of La Raza/Annie E. Casey Foundation Family Strengthening Award, and a Treasure of Los Angeles by the Central City Association.
“After three decades of working with at-risk children in low income areas,” Acevedo added, “Para Los Niños understands that the educational achievement gap created by poverty adversely affects the ability of children living in urban, at-risk areas to achieve their long-term potential.”
“We believe that education alone, however, is not enough to close the achievement gap; that by reducing risk factors, eliminating poverty-related barriers, and providing access to high-quality education, we can interrupt the cycle of poverty and support long-term success for children, families, and the communities in which they live,” she concluded.
Today’s ceremony was attended by current and former staff, Board members, longtime friends, and, most importantly, some of the children, youth and families with whom Para Los Niños is privileged to work. One of those is a remarkable young man named Victor Orzoto, a 6th grader at the Para Los Niños charter school. When speaking on behalf of his fellow students before the City Council, Victor thanked Para Los Niños for the quality of education he is receiving and how that has forever changed the quality of his future.
RESOLUTION
Para Los Niños Day
January 21, 2011
WHEREAS, with a $5,000 grant in 1980, an old eyelash factory at 6th and Gladys in the heart of Skid Row was rented, renovated and licensed, and opened as a child care facility in January of 1981; and
WHEREAS, for thirty years since, Para Los Niños has worked tirelessly to give children living in the poorest communities of Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties the education, skills and resources required to build a future beyond poverty; and
WHEREAS, today, the devastating effects of a litany of social problems such as unequal access to quality education, poverty, homelessness, gang violence, joblessness, domestic abuse, substance abuse, mental health issues, and illiteracy create learning barriers for thousands of children in our communities every day that prevent them from achieving their true potential and contribute to a continuous cycle of poverty; and
WHEREAS, after three decades of working with at-risk children in low income areas, Para Los Niños understands that the educational achievement gap created by poverty adversely affects the ability of children living in urban, at-risk areas to achieve their long-term potential, and believes that education alone is not enough to close the achievement gap; that by reducing risk factors, eliminating poverty-related barriers, and providing access to high-quality education, we can interrupt the cycle of poverty and support long-term success for children, families, and the communities in which they live; and
WHEREAS, under the stewardship of former President Miki Jordan, and the current leadership of President Gisselle Acevedo and its Board of Directors, Para Los Niños is now poised to build on its past to create a stronger future by developing a replicable model to more formally integrate educational programs with mental health and family support services in a place-based approach to more effectively close the achievement gap:
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Los Angeles City Council declares January 21, 2011, as PARA LOS NIÑOS DAY in the City of Los Angeles, and applauds the organization for celebrating its Thirtieth Anniversary by creating a strategic roadmap for future growth and development, and committing to a powerful new Vision: To be the model of excellence in integrated urban education, leading to long term success for children, families, and the communities in which they live.

PARA LOS NIÑOS NAMES NEW PRESIDENT AND CEO
Martine Singer to lead nationally accredited
child services agency and charter school operator
Para Los Niños, a nationally accredited and recognized Los Angeles-based child services agency and charter school operator, has appointed a new President and Chief Executive Officer announced Board Chair R. Christine Hershey.
Following an extensive national search, Martine Singer, a highly-regarded nonprofit executive who recently served as the executive director of Hollygrove, will assume the lead role at Para Los Niños effective February 27.
“We are extremely gratified that someone of Ms. Singer’s experience will lead Para Los Niños during this critical stage in the agency’s history,” said Hershey. “After a lengthy search, during which many extremely talented and qualified candidates were considered, the Board determined that Ms. Singer was the right person to lead Para Los Niños as it continues its mission of serving children and families in the most impoverished communities of our city. She has an unwavering commitment to children and extraordinary experience in both the nonprofit and corporate sectors in Southern California and nationally. We firmly believe that Martine has the vision and ability to guide Para Los Niños during a time of great challenge for publicly supported organizations.”
As President and CEO of Para Los Niños, Singer will be responsible for the success of all Para Los Niños programs. Together with the Board and senior management staff, she will work to ensure the agency’s continuing relationship with the communities it serves, the successful pursuit of the organization’s mission and vision, as well as the organization’s accountability to diverse stakeholders and funders.
Para Los Niños opened its doors in 1980 in response to the plight of children living on Skid Row. Today, in its 31st year of operation, Para Los Niños services benefit nearly 20,000 low-income children and their families each year in some of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Southern California to create academic success and social well-being for children. Through early education centers, charter schools, and wellness centers, Para Los Niños offers high-quality education integrated with family supports, mental health services and community engagement opportunities to thousands of children living in at-risk neighborhoods in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.
“It is an honor to work with Para Los Niños, a pioneer in addressing the educational and social welfare needs of low-income children,” said Singer. “With three decades of experience, Para Los Niños is demonstrably closing the achievement gap caused by poverty. I’m looking forward to joining the team and contributing my passion, expertise and vision to create pathways to success for the children – para los niños.”
Reporting to the Board of Directors, Singer will oversee a staff of 320 and an annual operating budget of $22 million. Singer will provide overall leadership for the daily activities of Para Los Niños, including operations, human resources management, marketing, financial management, program development, capital and acquisition development, and strategic direction. She will ensure continuous improvement in the quality of services and agency stability through development and implementation of accreditation standards, systems and procedures, and regular evaluation, will provide hands-on leadership in the areas of government, public, foundation and donor relations, and will act as a lead spokeswoman for Para Los Niños.
“There is no greater mission than to help children succeed,” added Hershey. “Para Los Niños has effectively carried out that mission for the past 31 years, becoming a trusted national business model for the provision of comprehensive, innovative child and family services. Under Martine’s leadership, with an active and committed Board working in concert with a talented, professional executive team, Para Los Niños is well-positioned to become the leading provider of high-quality services for children throughout the region.”
Singer succeeds Gisselle Acevedo, who served as President and CEO of Para Los Niños since 2006 and who recently left the organization to pursue a doctoral degree in child psychology.
Martine Singer
President & CEO
Before joining Para Los Niños in February, 2012, Martine served as Hollygrove’s Executive Director for six years. She began her work there as a consultant to Hollygrove’s Board of Directors after having been a longtime supporter, volunteer and neighbor.
During her tenure, she oversaw Hollygrove’s transition from residential to community-based services and its merger with the statewide agency EMQ FamiliesFirst. While at Hollygrove, she helped triple its annual budget, expanded services to South LA and initiated a master plan for its 3.5-acre campus. She also served on the team that won national accreditation for the first time for EMQ FamiliesFirst.
Prior to joining Hollygrove, Martine held executive positions in several global media companies. She founded and served as publisher for the first foreign-language edition of The New York Times and launched the Los Angeles Times' award-winning online service in 1993. Martine also founded her own consulting firm serving media and communications clients as well as nonprofit organizations.

10/12/11 Para Los Niños Honored at Unsung Heroes of Los Angeles Awards
The California Community Foundation and The Eisner Foundation recently honored Para Los Ni-ños for their outstanding service to the community at the 2011 Unsung Heroes of Los Angeles Awards, an event celebrating the power and impact of philanthropy in Los Angeles. Para Los Ni-ños received the prestigious Joan Palevsky Award for Outstanding Nonprofits in Education.
Our President and CEO Gisselle Acevedo made the following remarks upon accepting the award:
“Thank you so much for this recognition of our work.
I think the essence of Para Los Niños can be best captured in a quote by my role model, Marian Wright Edelman: ‘Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.’
The Para Los Niños approach to leaving our community better than we found it is by supporting healthy children and families.
We put education at the center of our efforts to break the cycle of poverty, while recognizing that children who live in a constant state of physical, psychological, and emotional risk have different educational requirements than those whose most basic needs are routinely met.
We integrate high-quality education with the family support and mental health services that children living in poverty need if they are to achieve long-term academic success and social well-being.
This does not, of course, happen without the hard work, commitment, and compassion of hundreds of staff, who are my personal heroes.
Joining me this evening are several teachers from the Para Los Niños Charter School, and two of our early education centers. Friends, please stand.
Our educators are truly heroic. They are brave, daring, and courageous. They are nurturing, creative, and set high expectations. They are idealistic and simultaneously pragmatic, and they are making the difference between success and failure for our young students.
I am honored to work with these extraordinary people every day.
Humorist Will Rogers once said, ‘We can’t all be heroes because somebody has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.’ So, I am going to now sit down and clap for the teachers of Para Los Niños and all the Unsung Heroes of 2011!
Thank you.”

10/20/10 - Hundreds of Para Los Niños Students Receive Books & Backpacks
Bundles of Books and Wells Fargo sponsor “Books for Kids Community Day”
On Saturday, October 16, 2010, more than three hundred and fifty Para Los Niños preschool and elementary school students and their families celebrated Bundles of Books’ first large-scale event in Los Angeles with the Books for Kids Community Day.
Parents attended Reading to Your Child trainings, while their children enjoyed fun learning activities on the playground, including music, great food, a photo station with Jack the Dog, arts & crafts, and book-making. Thanks to a $10,000 Wells Fargo Foundation grant, each child also received a backpack filled with books, school and art supplies.
The Bundles of Books event, one of several across the country, was to provide Para Los Niños students and their families with a fun-filled day aimed at encouraging children and parents to read together.
“We are so grateful for the support of Wells Fargo and Bundles of Books,” said Gisselle Acevedo, President and CEO of Para Los Niños. “Through partnerships like these, we truly can create a society where every child can read, because we know that illiteracy is a life-long sentence to social and economic impoverishment. When children share a love for reading with their parents, whole families and ultimately entire communities can thrive.”

2/2/12 School Accountability Report Card
Gratts Primary Center SARC now available
To view the School Accountability Report Card for the Para Los Niños Evelyn Thurman-Gratts Primary Center, click here.
Since November 1988, state law has required all public schools receiving state funding to prepare and distribute a SARC. A similar requirement is also contained in the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The purpose of the report card is to provide parents and the community with important information about each public school. A SARC can be an effective way for a school to report on its progress in achieving goals. The public may also use a SARC to evaluate and compare schools on a variety of indicators. Pursuant to Proposition 98 and the ESEA, all charter schools are also required to prepare and disseminate a SARC. Direct-funded charter schools are responsible for ensuring the school SARCs are made available to the public. To read more about SARCs, visit the Department of Education website.

ANTONIO R. VILLARAIGOSA
Mayor Villaraigosa Visits Teachers and Parents at Para Los Niños-Gratts
Primary Center and Discusses How Public School Choice Brings More
Opportunity and Innovation to LAUSD Schools
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa met with teachers and parents at Para Los Niños-Gratts
Primary Center today to discuss the school’s experience over the past year as a Public School Choice campus.
Villaraigosa’s visit falls on the day the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education will vote on new operators for 13 LAUSD campuses. A total of 48 applications were submitted by potential operators for 10 new campuses and three focus schools. Following today’s vote, a total of 74 LAUSD schools will have new leadership.
“Today, the lives of more than 20,000 students and their families will change for the better,” said Mayor Villaraigosa. “The opportunity to attend a revitalized school will set students on the course to a brighter future. Implementing change at our schools to increase performance is a necessity and thanks to Public School Choice, schools and students are being given a chance to thrive and succeed.”
Approved and implemented in 2009, Public School Choice calls for all school operators, including LAUSD, to compete to run new and failing schools. An application and evaluation process is used to determine the best candidates to operate schools designated for the program.
All families enrolled at PLN-Gratts have access to the Child and Family Wellness Center located on campus, which is staffed by a full-time social worker, a clinical therapist and special education teachers. The families also have access to services for childcare, internship and employment placement and food and shelter.
“It has been a pleasure to be here today to witness firsthand how Para Los Niños-Gratts Primary Center has implemented an innovative educational model that improves the quality of life for both the students and their families,” Villaraigosa said. “Our children deserve every opportunity to succeed, and it is imperative that we give them a solid support structure inside and outside the classroom.

4/19/11 The Best Start Metro LA Community Announces Grant Awardees

The Best Start Metro LA Community Guidance Body, the convening team at Para Los Niños and our funders at First 5 LA congratulate all the recipients of the Best Start Metro LA Collaborative Partners grant awards.
More than a year ago we came together as a community – parents and service agencies, neighbors and other stakeholders – to strengthen resources and opportunities for young children and their families in the Best Start Metro LA area. We recognized that we share a collective vision: children will grow stronger, safer and healthier when parents are supported and the community is actively engaged.
To that end, the Community Guidance Body began engaging families around the four Best Start goals: children are born healthy, maintain a healthy weight, are safe from abuse and neglect and are ready for kindergarten. We sought direct input from parents on their priorities for critical investment in place-based activities that would support these goals.
These priorities shaped the framework of the Collaborative Partners grant opportunity. From baby- and toddler-friendly parks to safer access to schools, healthy food choices to family literacy services, parents told us what they need, and you responded. In all, we received 39 applications of which 18 proposals were selected, totaling $477,500 in community investment. We are proud to have you join us in this important venture, and thank you for the time and dedication you invested in making it possible.

5/23/2011 Kids First: Five Big Ideas for Transforming Children’s Lives and America’s Future
A year ago we were introduced to UC Berkley professor, David Kirp, through our partnership with LAUP. As a result of the introduction, Kirp visited and spent a day with the teachers, staff and students at our early education center in South Los Angeles. A year later, Kirp published a book, “Kids First: Five Big Ideas for Transforming Children’s Lives and America’s Future”, and writes about Para Los Niños passing his Golden Rule test -- a principle guided by the notion that “Every child deserves what’s good enough for a child you love.” Click here to read the passage from the book.

5/25/2011 Para Los Niños Pays Tribute to Legacy of Businessman
Para Los Niños celebrated the life and legacy of late philanthropist Dr. Ibrahim El-Hefni by naming a wing of its downtown Family Learning Complex, which houses its Charter Elementary/Middle-School, in his honor. Dr. El-Hefni’s wife, Wensley, and his daughter, Suzanne Wright, joined more than 40 friends and members of the nonprofit organization’s staff, executive team and board of directors at the dedication reception.
“My father often said that the greatest legacy he could leave behind was to provide at-risk children the opportunity to receive the best education possible,” said Ms. Wright. “That is why he created the Technical Training Foundation, and that’s why I continue to strongly support Para Los Niños and its mission to help children succeed.”
Like many of the families Para Los Niños serves, Dr. El-Hefni was an immigrant who came to the Unites States from Egypt in the 1960s. An electrical engineer by trade, he established his own highly successful company, Microwave Research Corporation before passing away in May of 2005.
Speaking at Saturday’s dedication ceremony, Para Los Niños President and Chief Executive Officer Gisselle Acevedo praised Ms. Wright for providing children from economically challenged areas of Los Angeles the educational opportunities her father wanted them to have. “She has been a guardian angel to us. Her generosity to our students has given us a lifeline during trying times,” said. “Suzanne enables like-minded nonprofit organizations to collaborate and strengthen their individual missions.”
In addition to her work on behalf of the children, youth and families of Para Los Niños Ms. Wright serves on the Board of Trustees of the California Science Center Foundation. The former Rancho Palos Verdes resident, along with her mother, acts as trustee of the Ibrahim El-Hefni Technical Training Foundation.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, student leaders from the Para Los Niños Charter Elementary School presented Ms. Wright with a personal photo book. Guests were then treated to an art exhibit featuring multi-media pieces created by 5th grade students under the guidance of British art educator Malcolm Wray.
Now in its seventh year, the Para Los Niños Charter Elementary/Middle-School has 400 students in 20 classrooms from kindergarten to sixth grade. The school is founded on the belief that every child has the potential to reach high standards of achievement, and offers students a relevant curriculum and firsthand experiences that prompts them to ask questions, investigate solutions, solve problems and build conceptual understanding.

6/25/11 14 Para Los Niños Youth Receive Medical Training Through Youth Workforce Services
Fourteen Para Los Niños youth completed medical assistance training, thanks to a partnership with East Los Angeles Skills Center. The training consisted of 300 classroom instruction hours and a 200-hour paid internship at a medical facility. As a result, two of our participants have been placed in employment and all 14 participants will continue with additional training or have enrolled in college. The youth will also continue to receive job placement assistance from Para Los Niños. The partnership with East Los Angeles Skills Center was such a great success that we have been invited to send 30 more students to the program in the fall.

6/25/11 Award Winning Actor and Director Edward James Olmos Addresses Para Los Niños Charter Middle School Culminating Sixth Graders
Emphasizing that education is the great equalizer, award winning Actor and Director Edward James Olmos served as the commencement speaker for the 2011 culminating class of 6th grade students at the Para Los Niños Charter School.
“In ‘Stand and Deliver’ my character tells his students that Math is the great equalizer, and it’s true. Getting a good education, graduating from high school and going to college is the path to success for all kids, but especially kids who look like me and you,” said Olmos. “As you leave Para Los Niños and go off to middle school, you are looking at a fork in the road – you can either choose the path to success or you can select a route toward mediocrity and misery. Because you are Para Los Niños students, I know you will make the right choice!”
Olmos joined 48 culminating sixth grade students and their families; medical expert and television correspondent Dr. Aliza Lifshitz who also addressed the students; U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis’ Regional Representative Alicia Villarreal; and Para Los Niños Board Members, faculty and staff to celebrate the academic accomplishments of the graduates.
“As you head toward a new beginning, I want to offer you advice that has served me well during my own life,” said Gisselle Acevedo, president and chief executive officer of Para Los Niños. “First, embrace the world with an open heart and an open mind—many more possibilities will present themselves to you. Be courageous and resilient — focus on the power you have to overcome, don’t be distracted by what stands in your way. And finally, be kind to others, so that kindness can be returned to you. Each of you holds the promise of a better future in your hands...for yourselves, your communities and the world at large. I am counting on you to return to us, as teachers, principals, Board Members, elected officials ... or perhaps even President and CEO. We need you to make our communities safer, better, fairer places to live.”
The graduating class wrote a collaborative speech for the ceremony, including the following statement: “When we were asked what is Para Los Niños? We responded, Para Los Niños is our home. It is a place where the doors are always open to everyone in our community and everyone is helped in order to succeed in life. Para Los Niños has become the foundation of our future. PLN is a home where your voice, opinion, and vote count…. a place where you are accepted for who you are.”

6/30/11 Para Los Niños Introduces New Strategic Plan
Click here to view our Strategic Plan.
Through the support of our Board of Directors, and the diligence of our executive team, we recently completed an intense and comprehensive strategic planning process. The outcomes of this work are significant; for our organization and, we believe, for our field.
Most non-profits who share the same “competitive space” that we do focus largely on one aspect of the education continuum, whether education itself or, on the agency side, on one type of intervention.
While there is merit in this approach, thirty years of experience in serving at-risk communities, along with leading research on the subject of how children living in high-poverty communities best learn, tells us that neither alone is enough to keep children in these areas from falling into an ever widening achievement gap.
We have begun to put forward an evolved methodology that makes sense for children and families trying to overcome the challenges of poverty. How difficult must it be to learn basic math facts if one is worried about homelessness? How challenging would it be to concentrate if you suffered the affects of abuse, were hungry, or scared? We believe that achieving long-term success requires mental health and family support in concert with quality education. In short, we believe that children in low income neighborhoods require more than just a good school to succeed.
With this belief in mind, we are creating child and family wellness centers within our spectrum of services, where we will bring together the kind of high-quality, and targeted educational experiences that are relevant to low income, non-English speaking populations, with the mental health and family support services that are required for children experiencing the challenges of poverty; problems like homelessness, violence, hunger, and abuse.
Our child and family wellness centers will give families easier access to services and better enable case workers to integrate a child’s educational needs and goals, with the psychological, physical, and emotional support essential for real learning to occur.
We hope that you will join our efforts to bring this new strategic plan to life, and our mission to help children and families succeed in school and in life.
7/11/11 Major League Soccer Names Para Los Niños Staff Member as Community MVP!
Para Los Niños congratulates Family Advocate/Behavioral Assistant Eddi Ortiz who was recently selected as one of 18 Community MVPs by Major League Soccer and The Home Depot. In recognition of Eddi’s commitment to improving our community, he will be honored at an upcoming Club Deportivo Chivas USA home game and at the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game in New York on July 27. Eddi is also now eligible for the grand prize, a donation of $10,000 on his behalf to the nonprofit organization of his choice, Para Los Niños. You can support Eddi and Para Los Niños by clicking here and voting.
The Major League Soccer W.O.R.K.S./ The Home Depot Community MVP Contest gave Major League Soccer fans throughout the country the opportunity to nominate individuals who go above and beyond to make a difference in their community. One community MVP was selected to represent each of the 18 MLS clubs, and Eddi was selected to represent Los Angeles-based Club Deportivo Chivas USA.
Eddi first came to Para Los Niños many years ago as a student enrolled in our after school program. Raised in one of Los Angeles’ most impoverished and dangerous areas, Eddi understands first-hand the temptation of gangs, the seduction of drugs and the fear of violence. He knew that most people who live in these neighborhoods do so because they’re stuck; bound to those streets like cement, with no options, no mobility and no chance.
As a Youth and Family Advocate at Para Los Niños, Eddi works for the same organization that helped keep him on the right path so many years ago. In his job, Eddi works with children experiencing behavioral problems. He links our mental health and social services with children at our schools, ensuring that more at-risk youth get the help they need. Eddi also coaches soccer and organizes soccer clinics and matches between our after school programs. He finds the resources to transport the kids to games, purchase uniforms and equipment, and bring them to professional soccer games.
Looking back on it years later, Eddi realized he had found a passion for sports at Para Los Niños. He knew then, that he had a vision for his own life: to help turn his neighborhood around and give the children who live there a more promising future. Once he’d made that decision, he simply couldn’t leave. We're glad he didn't, and honored to have him on our team! Congratulations Eddi!

8/25/11 Anonymous Donor Will Match Your Gift!
Late this summer we learned that funding would be further reduced by 11% for our six Early Childhood Centers serving 650 children. With all the other cuts from our state funding, we are left with a barebones budget that allows less than $2 per child for learning materials for the year. This means that paint, paper, glue, books, educational toys, puzzles and crayons will be in very short supply for our youngest students. Their ability to develop skills—like holding a crayon or learning how to put together a puzzle—will be compromised by the lack of learning materials.
Thanks to an anonymous donor who will match all gifts made by September 15 up to $15,000, our new goal is to raise $15,000 to cover the costs of materials for our future artists, doctors, lawyers and teachers. That is approximately $50 per child per year—or $1 a week, less than the price of a cup of coffee. Where else will your dollars find such a rich return on investment? And where else will you charitable dollar double in value? Please click here to make a tax-deductible contribution to help our youngest students start their school experience with a fully stocked classroom.
Para Los Niños provides nurturing and high-quality child development services to approximately 600 very low-income children, ages six weeks to five-years at six Early Education Centers in the most impoverished neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Long-term research shows that early childhood education is critical in fostering later academic success, lowering the incidence of incarceration and increasing home ownership. At a time when less than half of all pre-schoolers in California are assessed as kindergarten ready, 100% of our graduating preschoolers were assessed as kindergarten-ready during the last academic year.
You support is an investment in a better future for our youngest learners. Please help today—any amount is greatly appreciated and will be put to immediate use in the classroom.

8/31/10 - LA/OC Building and Construction Trades Council Golf Tournament Raises $29,975 for Para Los Niños
On August 30, 2010 Via Verde Country Club set the stage for the 19th annual LA/OC Golf Tournament. Beginning their day early, players battled for the lowest team scores and a chance to win the $10,000 hole-in-one prize sponsored by Union Bank. At the end of 18 holes, golfers enjoyed a delicious lunch, an award presentation, and a prize drawing that included sporting tickets and equipment, and electronics. Para Los Niños thanks Richard Slawson, Executive Secretary for the Council, his committed staff and all the golfers and sponsors for their generous support.

8/31/11 Para Los Niños Charter Schools Test Scores Rise
Increases at two schools are result of comprehensive focus on education, health and well-being of students
With improved Academic Performance Index (API) scores at both the Para Los Niños charter elementary school and middle school, there is growing optimism that the organization’s comprehensive focus on the education, health and well-being of its students is making a positive difference.
The middle school’s rise of 123 points, from 708 in 2010 to 831 in 2011, indicates that Para Los Niños sixth graders have surpassed the average increases at the Los Angeles Unified School District and across the State of California.
While the middle school sampling was small (only 43 sixth grade students), increases were also experienced at the Para Los Niños charter elementary school (K-5), where the API jumped 38 points for the 202 students tested, also outperforming the LAUSD and state averages.
Gisselle Acevedo, president and chief executive officer of Para Los Niños, was pleased with the newly announced results but emphasized that there is still much ground to cover. “I am very proud that all the hard work of our students and teachers this past year paid off, but in order to ensure that our students are competitive in the real world, we must do better and continue this upward trend.
“In our Para Los Niños schools we look at children in their entirety, responding to their physical, emotional, and academic needs in an integrated way. We know that our students are highly motivated to learn, and our parents feel connected in partnership with the school, yet over the past several years our students have not been as effectively demonstrating their knowledge on standardized testing as we would like. To counter that, we sought new supports, and I am cautiously optimistic today that our approach is moving us in the right direction.”
Last fall, Para Los Niños retained Strategic Learning Initiatives (SLI), headed by John Simmons, thanks to a grant from the Drown Foundation. Strategic Learning Initiatives is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating student and adult learning that over the past 20 years has worked with more than 65 schools serving low-income children and families.
SLI puts into practice national research that reveals the qualities that must be found in a school in order for it to thrive and works with schools to ensure they are in place. It is a turnaround strategy that builds on and invests in the leadership and skills of the staff already working in the schools that has proven highly effective
This strategy, referred to as SLI’s Focused Instruction Process, includes five components: shared leadership, on-site professional development, rigorous instruction, parent engagement and a culture of trust and continuous improvement.
Para Los Niños administrators and teachers were enthusiastic about this new comprehensive methodology and embraced their opportunities for professional development. “This new approach really taught me how to better assess our students so that they may fully develop the skills they will need to be successful in life,” said 5th grade teacher Celeste Ruano.
“Reading and writing lessons were taught with a specific objective, in which academic skills were embedded. Through classroom-focused lessons, specific standards were reinforced and solidified. Children were able to then make connections to other academic areas, such as science and social studies. We knew at that point that the learnings were deeply rooted for long term application.”
Additional investments were also made by Para Los Niños last year to close the achievement gap. They bought a web-based instructional program focused on how teachers can support students in mastering state standards; brought in an exceptional new principal; and created a new position of Curriculum Coordinator, which will, among other objectives, analyze student data, and ensure a stronger academic continuum between the school day and the time students spend in the after-school program.
The results of the PLN approach specifically on the standardized API test, which is just one measurement of a student’s success, were promising:
PLN Charter Elementary School (202 low-income 2nd-5th grade students)
The growth target established for the Academic Performance Index (API) was 5 points; which was exceeded by actual growth of 38 points (from and API of 699 in 2010 to 737 in 2011).
The Charter Elementary School’s API of 737 outperformed the API for LAUSD of 728. Growth in API from 2010 to 2011 was more significant for the PLN CES than for LAUSD or the State as a whole (which grew by 38 points, 19 points, and 10 points respectively).
PLN Charter Middle School (43 low-income 6th grade students)
The growth target established for the Academic Performance Index (API) was 5 points; which was exceeded by actual growth of 123 points (from an API of 708 in 2010 to 831 in 2011).
The Charter Middle School’s API of 831 outperformed the API for LAUSD of 728 and that of the State of 778 (please note that this represents the performance of a single Grade level with a small number of students). Growth in API from 2010 to 2011 was more significant for the PLN CMS than for LAUSD or the State as a whole (which grew by 123 points, 19 points, and 10 points respectively).

9/30/11 Helping Families Tackle Childhood Obesity
Reflecting on the Para Los Niños Kids N Fitness Program
Over the course of just 6 weeks, Alfonso Vargas noticed a dramatic change in his child’s eating habits. His nine-year-old daughter Camila drank more 100% fruit juice and less soda and she consumed more vegetables. She ate more balanced portions at mealtimes and showed more confidence in her physical abilities. Teachers also reported that Camila engaged in more physical activity at school. Alfonso reinforced these changes by cooking healthier meals, turning off the TV and encouraging Camila to play games outside. “My dad and I worked together!” Camila boasted in a recent interview at the Para Los Niños Family Learning Complex.
This shift in habits resulted from the Para Los Niños Kids N Fitness program (KNF), made possible by the Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Boeing Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Services, Center for Vulnerable Populations Research and the National Institute of Health/ National Institutes of Nursing Research. Funding from these foundations enabled a team of UCLA researchers to first conduct a study to determine Camila’s weight, health and habits. Published recently in the Journal for Specialists in Pediatric Nursing, this study laid the groundwork for a KNF curriculum that took a whole-family approach to confronting childhood obesity in low-income youth in Los Angeles.
According to Let’s Move, a national initiative to end childhood obesity in America, nearly 1 in 3 children in America are overweight or obese and for African American and Hispanic communities, that number approaches 1 in 4. Lower income children are also more likely to suffer from excess weight and obesity. Using the 2007 Local Youth Risk Behavior Survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the study that spawned KNF found that Spanish speaking children reported having lower levels of physical activity than their white counterparts. In light of this finding, UCLA researchers included games such as soccer and Cuatro Esquinas (Four Corners) in their recommendations for increasing physical activity.
Use of this and other recommendations in the study paved the way for encouraging results in KNF. Researchers observed positive diet changes as well as an average decrease from two hours of television a day to one. Participants in KNF also began working out at least sixty minutes a day, three to four days a week. Families and KNF administrators rejoiced in the measured improvement in these exceptional children.
Like the other 139 seven-to-eleven-year-old children who participated in the study that inspired KNF, Camila fell into the category of low-income bilingual youth attending elementary school in urban Los Angeles. 97% of children in the study were Hispanic and the ratio of girls to boys was three to two. And like 36% of the children in the study, Camila was also considered overweight based on her Body Mass Index. Camila never felt singled out for her excess weight, however, because researchers included children of all shapes and sizes and valued each student’s privacy in the data collection process. So wide-eyed Camila could relax and enjoy watching a KNF teacher pour granules into a bowl to demonstrate just how much sugar goes into one can of soda. Through this demonstration and other entertaining activities such as hoola hoop races, Camila received suggestions on how to stay healthy and active.
KNF provided these tips in a 6 week period of after-school classes which contained lessons on portion size, fat intake and strategies for special occasions. This family-centered intervention program included components for student and parent/guardian alike. Camila recalls her father Alfonso instructing her at home to limit her treats to three small cookies. The new nutritional knowledge so inspired Camila that she even advised her own mother Patty to start drinking water instead of soda.
Now in 6th grade, Camila has fond memories of the perks of the program- among them a pedometer to count her steps, a water bottle and apples and milk from Subway. She still practices what she learned and wants to recommend KNF to other students. She even wishes she could participate again and be reminded on a daily basis of the importance of nutrition and moving her body.
Despite gloomy obesity statistics, the Office of the Surgeon General asserts that healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower the risk of becoming obese and developing related diseases. Thanks to our generous sponsors, the Para Los Niños Kids N Fitness program embodied this spirit of hope by helping families lower that risk for Camila and children like her.

9/7/10 - A New School Opens - Para Los Niños-Gratts Primary Center to Serve 360 K-1 Neighborhood Students
On the morning of Tuesday, September 7, 2010, nearly 350 anxious young students walked into their gleaming new school – a beautiful state-of-the-art architectural campus built in the heart of the Pico Union district – for the first day of school. In the face of construction delays, Andrea Purcell, the school’s principal, and her 24 staff members worked resolutely the week prior – often in hardhats and day-glo vests -- to prepare their classrooms for the eager new students. Judging from the enthusiastic reactions of the students and their families on opening day, the first semester at PLN-Gratts Primary Center is off to a great start!
Para Los Niños was one of only five charter schools selected by Los Angeles Unified School District to operate one of 30 new and underperforming public school campuses. The new Para Los Niños – Gratts Primary Center is a model of integrated urban education. By locating critical family wellness services such as social and mental health services on campus, PLN – Gratts works toward allowing Kindergarten and First Grade students to achieve their fullest academic potential by ensuring a solid foundation in personal well being and the skills necessary to succeed in school and life. Para Los Niños provides standards-based curriculum in English, Math, Science and Social Studies, benchmark assessments, and data-driven instruction. Each student and family works with one teacher, an “advisor,” for the duration of his or her tenure at the school. Each student’s advisor works to coordinate a team of experts to provide an individualized support structure that may help facilitate the stability necessary to fully participate in the academic program. The PLN – Gratts Primary Center supports the needs of English Language Learners in either a transitional bi-lingual program or an English Immersion program. All students receive support for English Language Development regardless of the program in which a parent chooses to enroll their child.

After School Campaign Launched
Budget cuts have effectively eliminated California's School Age Community Child Care Services or Latchkey program. Statewide as many as 13,000 young children may lose access to after school care services, services designed to increase student's chances for academic success while providing their parents peace of mind.
With the start of the new school year just weeks away, the Para Los Niños Charter Elementary School ask for your help in increasing public awareness of this crisis, specifically in regards to its impact on Southern California's underprivileged children.
Faced with a 50% reduction in state funding for its 413 students, the Para Los Niños Charter Elementary School After School Program also needs your direct support. Our goal is to raise $35,000 in online donations through this P.A.S.S. - Protect After School Services - campaign.
It costs $20 a day to provide one elementary school child after school service. This translates into approximately $3,500 a year per child. We ask our community to join together and provide 10 children one year of after school care.
The hours after school lets out and before parents get home are among the most important in a child’s day. Tragically for California families, the recently signed state budget has eliminated several such programs, including the one Para Los Niños Charter Elementary School depends.
Protect After School Services. P.A.S.S., don’t fail our kids! Whether it is a $20 donation for one day of care or a $2,000 gift for 10 days, your support is urgently needed.
To make a donation, please click here and be sure to put in the “Comments” section that this donation is for the P.A.S.S. campaign.
Art Educator Malcolm Wray Returns to Charter School
Noted art educator Malcolm Wray returned to the Para Los Niños Charter School for a week of workshops in January. He last visited in the school in March 2005, and the children were thrilled to see the British sensation return. In classrooms brimming with the children’s energy and Mr. Wray’s infectious enthusiasm, the workshops offered diverse lessons of art appreciation. Using a variety of media and materials, the children studied portraits, flowers, Mexican Colonial Architecture, and ocean life. The striking results of this workshop will be proudly displayed throughout the Charter School during the next few months.
We invite you to look at some our children's artwork from this workshop by clicking here.

Many thanks to all of you who came and celebrated with us at our Cinco de Mayo event, Celebrando La Vida on Friday, May 1st at the historic Gilmore Adobe. Para Los Niños’ Youth Workforce Services Holds Another Successful Job Fair
On Friday, June 8, Para Los Niños’ Youth Workforce Services Department held a large job fair at our Family Learning Complex’s beautiful new library. The fair attracted 79 job seekers, including Youth Workforce Services participants, family members of Para Los Niños clients, and others referred by collaborating agencies—most ages 16 to 24. The fair provided underserved youth with valuable opportunities in today’s competitive job market.
Nineteen employers attended the fair, from large corporations to public agencies to nonprofits — among them UPS, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and North East Trees. Also at the fair was NBC Universal, which contributes to Para Los Niños financially and provides job opportunities to our youth.
As the lead agency for the Power of One East LA Youth Workforce Services network, Para Los Niños has been organizing quarterly job fairs since 2004. Through the fairs, as well as educational and job-search services, Para Los Niños is becoming a significant employment resource for youth in downtown and East Los Angeles. “Para Los Niños’ applicants are better than average; they come dressed for success, make eye contact, introduce themselves, shake my hand, and provide their résumés,” says Roberta Jefferson, a recruiter for Universal. “Most important, they have a direction in life and prove to be reliable workers.”
For one young woman, the fair was an important first step. Patty, a 20-year-old mother, came to the fair looking for a customer service position to help support her child. Patty first learned about Para Los Niños when our Youth Workforce Services helped her boyfriend, Carlos, return to school, earn his degree, and find a well-paying job at Toyota. Initially, Patty registered her 4-month-old baby for Para Los Niños child care. In assessing Patty’s needs, the childcare center’s site supervisor referred Patty to our Youth Workforce Services. At the fair, Patty met with a recruiter from AFLAC, a major insurance company. The recruiter invited Patty to a job interview for a customer service position the following week.
Our next job fair will be in the fall, just in time for the holiday hiring season. Spread the word!

Para Los Niños Child Development Center Dedicated in Honor of Tina and Rick Caruso
On Wednesday, January 10, 2007, Para Los Niños honored Tina and Rick Caruso for their unwavering support of our children and families. During a carnival-themed party, our flagship Child Development Center was named “The Tina and Rick Caruso Child Development Center.” The Center, which opened in 1980, is the original site of Para Los Niños’ work, and provides 135 impoverished infants and toddlers with high-quality care and early childhood education.
“Tina and Rick know – as does Para Los Niños – that an investment in young children is one that offers incredible returns,” said Para Los Niños President Gisselle Acevedo. “The infant and preschool years are ones rich with intellectual, emotional, and moral growth. Among the most compelling studies for our work with young children is one that showed that for every $1 invested in early childhood programs, benefits of $3-8 were returned to the child and society as a whole.”
“The children of Para Los Niños represent the future” offered Rick Caruso. “They will be the ones who will build, who will lead, who will change things for the better. This agency and its programs are ensuring that will happen, by giving previously overlooked children and their families the safe haven and loving environment the rest of us often take for granted.”
“I am always moved by what goes on here,” added Tina. “It has been the greatest gift to our family to be part of the nurturing environment of Para Los Niños. From the minute we walked in the door many years ago, we knew this program was about hope.”
Joining the dedication ceremony were several local dignitaries who also lauded the Caruso family, including Los Angeles City Councilmember José Huizar, School Board member Mónica García, and Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton, who introduced the family during the dedication ceremony.
In addition to celebrating the naming of the Tina and Rick Caruso Child Development Center, the event also celebrated Rick’s 48th birthday, complete with a street carnival for the children who attend the Center. The children enjoyed clowns, a juggler, balloon artists, arts and crafts tables, cookie design tables, high striker, cotton candy carts, popcorn carts, and a bounce house.

Para Los Niños Proudly Presents the 2008-2009 Annual Report, entitled "Reality."
Para Los Niños invites you to view the 2008-2009 annual report. Featured in this year's report is a gritty and unvarnished representation of the children and families we serve, told largely through "uncut" stories of three real clients. We believe it speaks to the great perseverance and potential of those we presently serve, while highlighting the importance of reaching more children and families desperate for care. We hope it shatters perceptions of people in need, while providing a real and lasting sense of what's required to escape the cycle of poverty.
We hope you will embrace this effort and help us share our story and the stories of those we proudly serve.

Remarkable, Busy Summer Season at Para Los Niños
Summer has been a remarkable and incredibly busy season for Para Los Niños thus far. Since the Cinco de Mayo Celebration, the Para Los Niños community has had the great joy of watching the fifth grade class graduate from the Charter Elementary School, cheering as the littlest ones experienced their own culmination ceremonies from Preschool into Kindergarten, and preparing for the opening of the Middle School in the fall.
Para Los Niños continues to search for a permanent middle school site, but come September, the new Middle School will offer a unique and progressive curriculum to its first sixth grade class at the Family Learning Complex, where Charter Elementary School is housed.
In addition, Para Los Niños now operates the Joy Picus Child Development Center at City Hall, and the child development center at Eisner Pediatric & Family Medical Center. Furthermore, Para Los Niños is preparing to open its tenth early childhood center in East LA this fall. And to top it all off, the Youth Development Services program, which provides life skills training and mentoring to foster care youth transitioning into independent living, will be moving into its new offices in Leimert Park located in South Los Angeles.
Para Los Niños would not be able to meet the ever growing needs of the clients without the friendship and participation of its supporters. The children, youth and families of Para Los Niños thanks you!

The 13th Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration, Celebrando La Vida Raises More Than $670,000!
In the midst of a challenging economy, more than 600 civic and business leaders, and young urban professionals of Para Los Niños attended our annual signature fundraising event, The 13th Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration, collecting more than $670,000 for education and social services programs. Guests celebrated the Mexican holiday with a delicious dinner, dancing all night long, a serenade by mariachis, a cigar lounge and espresso bar, and much more.
Joining the festivities were elected officials Los Angeles School Board President Mónica García and School Board members Yolie Flores Aguilar and Tamar Galatzan, City Councilmember Tom La Bonge, City Controller-elect Wendy Greuel, and County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. Actors Jesse Garcia and Aimee Garcia were also in attendance.
Humbled by the magnitude of support, Gisselle Acevedo, President and CEO of Para Los Niños said, “Tonight is when Para Los Niños gets the opportunity to throw a party for you, our gracious donors, supporters and friends, for helping us to ensure that children do not roam the streets, choose violence, use drugs, or cry in the middle of the night because they are hungry.
We are grateful to each and every single one of you for your participation and support!

The Wal-Mart Foundation Donates $50,000 to Para Los Niños After-school Program
PLN Program Gets High Marks From LAUSD
The Para Los Niños After-school Program is motivating children to attend school and is helping them to raise their test scores, according to data recently released by the Los Angeles Unified School District.
According to LAUSD evaluators, fourth and fifth graders participating in the Para Los Niños After-school Program scored an average of 4 points higher than predicted by the evaluators on the California English Language Arts test. The evaluators point to this achievement as a “value added” by our program.
In addition, the Para Los Niños program had the highest attendance rate of all after-school providers at LAUSD elementary schools. This demonstrates that the students and their families appreciate the high quality of service our program provides – including low teacher/student ratios, dedicated staff, our unique values curriculum, arts and fitness enrichments, and linkages to our comprehensive family and mental health services. These services translate into high program attendance, which in turn increases school-day attendance and academic performance.
The positive reviews go behond the children and their families -- Para Los Niños scored above average among after-school providers in a survey of principals at participating schools.
After-school programs like that at the elementary schools provided by Para Los Niños exist because of the lack of educational resources and safe havens in the most impoverished areas of Los Angeles. The after-school hours have been proven to be the most dangerous for inner-city youth – a time when they are at greatest risk of gang involvement, substance abuse, and early sexual activity. Para Los Niños helps children overcome these obstacles and succeed in school by providing our after-school services to 1,900 low-income students, ages 5 to 18 years, at ten LAUSD elementary and middle schools, as well as at Para Los Niños Charter Elementary School and Charter Middle School.
The achievements of the PLN After-school Program are only made possible through generous private donations from corporations, foundations, and individuals. Para Los Niños thanks The Wal-Mart Foundation for its grant of $50,000 in support of our After-school Program. Please join The Wal-Mart Foundation in supporting Para Los Niños’ After-school Program by going to our home page and clicking on “Make a Donation.”
The Wonder of Learning: The Hundred Languages of Children, an exhibition from Reggio Emilia, Italy, will be hosted in Santa Monica, CA
Para Los Niños invites you to the “The Wonder of Learning: The Hundred Languages of Children” exhibition, which will be held in Santa Monica from January to April 2010 through a collaboration between Reggio Children, NAREA and First Presbyterian Nursery School and Para Los Niños.
“This traveling exhibition is offered as a "democratic piazza" calling attention to the importance of education and schools as places for discussion and exchange. In continuity with the previous exhibition, The Hundred Languages of Children, the new exhibition also aims to reconfirm the values that underlie the educational philosophy of the Municipal Infant-Toddler Centers and Preschools of Reggio Emilia and in particular to highlight the changes, innovations and developments that have taken place. The exhibition speaks to all those involved in education as well as to all members of the general public who believe that research on the processes of learning and education is of crucial importance for society. We grow. You grow.
As part of our mandate, Green Awakening provides local charities and community initiatives with a source of income to help them overcome their financial needs and reach their goals.
We are proud to partner with Para los Niños to offer our organic and Fair Trade certified coffee to you. $2.50 from every bag of coffee purchased is given to Para los Niños to help further all of the amazing work they are doing in our communities.
Our coffee is grown by co-ops of Peruvian farmers in the Amazon basin. Not only do we provide a ‘fair trade price’ for their coffee but we support their communities by offering additional funding for the continued development of their farm lands and communities.

Green Awakening was based on this idea: to establish an ethical food organization, based on a revolutionary new business model. In our company, the small farmers would be partners and would directly benefit from the business’ growth and revenues. At the same time, our organization would contribute to the consumers’ community by providing a source of revenue to local organizations and institutions.
This idea grew, and Green Awakening was born; an inclusive and socially responsible organization that would produce a delicious, fair trade certified and organic coffee.
We supply an additional $.50 per bag directly to the education fund for the farmer’s children in Peru. Like Para los Niños, we recognize the importance of supporting the entire family from birth to healthy adulthood.
A cup of coffee never felt so good!

Cafe Mujer is produced by small farmers, all of them women. Growing this delicious gourmet coffee helps these women increase their social, economic and political roles. 24% of the proceeds from every bag sold goes back to these women’s communities to help sustain their families and continue to ensure their success as coffee farmers.
