On Site After-school Programs — Academic Enrichment and Positive Alternatives for Children Ages 5 to 18

Para Los Niños’ After-school Program has two components: a school-based After-school Program which provides care for 1,000 elementary school-aged children, ages 5 to 11, each weekday, before and after school and during school vacations; and a Youth Center, which provides educational activities and enrichment to youth aged 11 to 18. Activities include tutoring and homework help as well as cultural, recreational and other educational activities. The program is located at seven Los Angeles Unified School District elementary campuses, and at our own Charter School. The After-school Program promotes literacy and educational attainment through a variety of programs tailored to meet the needs of low-income children.

In 2002-2003, program staff created "My Values Project," so that children could explore universal core values such as trust, respect, responsibility, compassion, and patience, in a non-judgmental, participatory environment. Each weekly curriculum theme is chosen by parents and is explored through creative activities, community service activities, recreation, parental involvement, and field trips.

Youth Center

Academic enrichment is the heart and soul of the Youth Center program. Each year, the center encourages and motivates more than 280 participants through a variety of activities, including computer classes, field trips, social activities, arts education, life-skills training and youth leadership training. As always, the Youth Center continues to focus on improving the literacy of our teens. Our efforts, combined with parental involvement and comprehensive social-service support, enhances reading proficiency, solidifies English-language skills, and amends academic problems of participants. “My Values Project,” as in the elementary school component of the program, teaches universal values through a variety of hands-on approaches. In May 2004, the Youth Center opened its door for the first time before 3 p.m., to provide services to off-track youth in year round school systems.
