Emergent Literacy Program

Para Los Niños’ 6th Street Child Development Center was home to an innovative Emergent Literacy Program, which was established in collaboration with the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education. This program taught critical literacy skills, and enabled Spanish-speaking children to enter kindergarten at or above grade level. First grade graduates of our program scored above the national norm in English on Stanford 9 reading and math subtests, and higher than all other children (both English Language Learners and children proficient in English) in the district at their grade level on the English language subtest as well. Children who attended Para Los Ninos’ Child Development Centers were half as likely as other ELLs to be referred for special tutoring or other remedial programs. Furthermore, countering the trend of ELLs to lose ground as they progress through school, Para Los Ninos’ graduates continued to progress and outscore other ELLs.
