In May 2018, First 5 LA awarded PLN $5.9M over two years to lead Best Start Region 1, one of five, two-tiered Regional Best Start strategies throughout LA County. Tier 1 includes: to regionally build organizational capacity, mobilize regional resources, develop shared learning networks and develop and participate in Regional advocacy. Tier 2 includes: to locally build resident and agency leadership, communication and outreach strategies, local resource mobilization and local advocacy, and develop community-led change strategies and interventions. Region 1 makes up the Best Start Communities of Metro LA (which we currently oversee), East LA, Southeast LA and El Monte/South El Monte.

Para Los Niños has a rich partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District.  LAUSD has been a long time partner with our YouthSource Centers through the co-location of a Pupil Service and Attendance (PSA) Counselor at each site.  In addition, we have long partnered with their adult schools, both Friedman and the East LA Skills Center.  Most recently, through a grant with the Department of Mental Health, we are partnering and collaborating with LAUSD’s Department of Health and Human Services in the support and capacity building around trauma-informed practices in both Local District Central and Local District East elementary and middle schools.

PepsiCo awarded Para Los Niños a $50,000 grant to fight child hunger by providing weekly backpacks with food to all PLN Gratts Primary Center students so that they have food and snacks to take home for the weekend. The Gratts Primary Center serves 300 Transitional Kindergarten through 1st-grade students living in the Westlake community of Los Angeles.

Para Los Niños is a member of the UnidosUS Affiliate Network, collaborating on programs and advocacy to address the social, economic, and political barriers faced by the Latino community.
